If you seek Truth, you will not seek to gain a victory by every possible means; and when you have found Truth, you need not fear being defeated.
Epictetus
The power of truth. Plain and simple yet difficult at times to comprehend.
My interpretation is that if you are looking purely to win an argument or prove a point to get one up on someone you are open to bias. That can lead to an untruth. Even if you score the point and seem to win that argument you in fact lose the war. Your victory is on falsehood. Falsehood is the equivalent of sandy ground. Houses built on sandy ground look good to start with. But sooner or later the sands shift and the foundations fail…
The flip side of this is that if you seek the truth for the truths sake you will not have to fear defeat or losing the argument. To start with you have fact and evidence on your side. This is a position of strength.
Second, if you do lose the argument it will be because the facts and evidence have changed. All will see that your position was correct and had changed or evolved.
